Avigan will be the first medicine for Ebola?

The Ebola disease is now invading the Africa countries and caused a lot of death. Many countries and pharmaceutical companies are trying to find a proper medicine for Ebola. According to latest news, Avigan might be the first medicine for Ebola, and it might be on the market at the beginning of 2015.

Avigan was a medicine for flu in the past. It was developed by FUJIFILM company and was approved to sell on the market this March. Recently, this drug has been given to several patients who were evacuated from Ebola-hit West Africa to Europe. According to some animal research , Avigan was effective for Ebola disease, and the clinical trials are about to carry out in mid-November in France and Guinea. The safety and effectiveness will be done meanwhile.

As soon as the effect of Avigan is approved, the Fujifilm Company and Japan government will provide this drug to West Africa, and will also provide to other countries and regions if necessary.

Avigan, also known as T-705 or Favipiravir, is an experimental anti-viral drug being developed by Toyama Chemical of Japan with activity against many RNA viruses. Like some other experimental antiviraldrugs (T-1105 and T-1106), it is a pyrazinecarboxamide derivative. Favipiravir is active against influenza viruses, West Nile virus, yellow fever virus, foot-and-mouth disease virus as well as other flaviviruses, arenaviruses, bunyaviruses and alphaviruses.
